Mexico - The Musical Land
Mexico's Culture and History is filled with romance and drama and it has many historical attractions. There are the standard ruins of the Olmecs, Maya and Aztec. Also there are the train routes used by the legendary Pancho Villa. These are the main reasons, second only to the beaches of Cancun and Acapulco that people come to Mexico. You may ask "why," and the reason is because of the tale of Mexico's past, through an overwhelming amount of physical remains, is as romantic, dramatic, blood-curling and complicated as it gets.
The Olmec, having resided in what is today known as the Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco, is the first known civilization to exist in Mesoamerica. They are particularly famous for their massive stone heads carved from basalt boulders, very often depicting their rulers and weighing several tons. Several examples from the exhibition were dragged across miles of terrain and river before reaching their final destination in what is now known as San Lorenzo, the former Olmec capital. First discovered in the nineteenth century, these stone figures have fascinated archaeologists for over century, and I am sure you will be as equally amazed. The exhibition displays a wide variety of treasures, ranging in size from the enormous 'smiling head' (Colossal Head 9) and a large throne to miniature replicas of presumed rituals no more than a foot high.
The Mayans used the stars (Astronomy) to correlate their cycles and were actually quite advanced in many of their calculations. They also had a complex religious system that worked in tandem with those cycles. Like most religious systems, there were plenty of warnings and predictions about what would happen if people did not adhere, get in line and amend their ways. These predictions, along with the current state of affairs around the globe, and the prognostications of many famous and not so famous personalities, have all contributed to the belief that December 21, 2012 must mean the Apocalypse is coming.
Although the civilization that created the Easter Island heads appeared after the Olmec civilization, they have one thing in common'heads. Several thousand miles separate the sites of the Olmec heads and the sites of the Easter Island heads. Could these widely separated civilizations have consulted about sculptural techniques?
Hot cocoa has been around a long time and for good reason. It is one of the most potent antioxidant beverages you can drink, plus it is naturally delicious! Archeologists have found that the oldest civilization of the Americas, the Olmecs, (1500-400 BC), were probably the first users of cacao. The Mayans continued consuming-based drinks made with beans. Chocolatl was the name of a drink made from roasted cocoa beans, water and spices and was consumed voraciously by the aristocracy. They primarily drank cocoa but the beans were also valued as a currency.
